August 24, 2011

PBS Coals was one of six Pennsylvania companies recognized Wednesday for reclaimming coal mining sites to exemplary conditions.

Somerset County’s leading employer received reclamation awards from the Pennsylvania Coal Association for improving land use and water quality at sites in Brothersvalley Township and Jenner Township. The annual banquet was held at Seven Springs Mountain Resort.

PBS Coals received an award through Croner Inc. for reclaiming aproximately 178 acres in Brothersvalley Township. The site has improved from pre-mining conditions and is now used for farming
and residential purposes, according to the association.

The company also was recognized for reclaimingg 91 acres in Jenner Township. The site is where the Quecreek miner rescue movie “The Pennsylvania Miners’ Story” was filmed in 2002. The land is now
used for farming, pastures and forest land.

“It is a very prestigious award,” said Peter Vuljanic, the company’s executive vice president for project development. “It exemplifies the efforts of all empployees, management and staff at PBS.”

Amerikohl Mining, Amfire Mining Co., Consol Energy, P&N Coal Co. and Waroquier Coal Co. were also honored for their reclamation efforts.

U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy, who presented awards to each of the companies, stressed the importance of the coal industry to Pennsylvania.
“We’re going to continue to need energy, and coal is a big part of that,” he said. “Coal plays a critical part in this region in creating jobs and helping the economy.”
